Centennial Celebration’s Final Day Sold Out
October 8, 2003 - If
you planned to attend the final day of December 12-17’s First Flight
Centennial Celebration at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill
Devil Hills, North Carolina, and have yet to order your tickets, you
might want to try eBay. Organizers have declared December 17 a sell out
and expect 35,000 people to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
world’s first manned, powered flights by Orville and Wilbur Wright.
EAA’s 1903 Wright Flyer authentic reproduction will recreate
those first flights at 10:35 a.m., precisely 100 years later to the
minute (weather permitting). EAA Young Eagles Chairman and aviation
legend General Chuck Yeager will follow the commemoration with a
ceremonial flight with the one millionth EAA Young Eagle.
The National Park Service has sold
137,276 tickets for the week, and individual one-day tickets for
December 13-16 are still available at $10 per day.* (December 12 is a
non-ticketed day.)
“We are delighted with the enthusiastic
response we’ve received from the thousands of people who have chosen
to pay tribute in December to the genius of Wilbur and Orville Wright by
joining us here at the very place where it all happened,” said
Lawrence A. Belli, Superintendent of the National Park Service’s Outer
Banks Group. “We want to stress that although the 17th has sold out,
tickets are still available for the other remaining days. The National
Park Service, the State of North Carolina, and all of our centennial
partners have created a memorable and fitting celebration in honor of
these two brothers who changed the world.”
EAA’s Countdown to Kitty Hawk,
presented by Ford Motor Company and supported by Microsoft Flight
Simulator, Eclipse Aviation, and Northrup Grumman, will make its final
appearance during the six-day celebration. Themes for the other five
days:
- December 12 - Igniting The Imagination
- December 13-14 - Remember The Past,
Imagine The Future
- December 15 - Protecting The Home Of
The Brave
- December 16 - In History’s
Footsteps, Celebrating 100 Aviation Pioneers
* Tickets for senior citizens, age 62 and
older, and disabled individuals are $5 each, while available. Although
children age 12 and under are free, they will still need a ticket to
enter the park.
Tickets include free shuttle
transportation between Wright Brothers National Memorial and designated
remote parking sites, plus access to all buildings, grounds, exhibits
and performances open to the general public at the memorial during the
event. Seating is not included in the price; chairs may be rented on
site.
